What Doesn't Cure You...

When one journeys into the darkest place on Earth, one must be careful as death can sometimes be a kinder fate than what others are made to deal with. In 1861, a man named Wilhelm Blakely Forrester learned this the hard way as his wife was driven mad from the horrors she was forced to experience which only she could see. Until coming to the city of Blackbriar, his wife had been a nurse who cared for the mentally ill. Having made his fortune in Kravenwood, Forrester bought a plot of land where he had intended to build his home. Instead, he began building a massive sanitorium to help the chronically sick and mentally ill hoping to fulfill his wifes dream of helping others. At first, things went well during construction until Spring rains came making it more a curse than what Forrester had envisioned. It turned out that the land he had purchased had in the past been a swamp which had dried up on it's own and become overgrown so that none had guessed what it had once been. No matter what efforts were made to drain the swamp, it was as if God himself conspired against them as the rains kept falling and diminished only when they stopped their efforts to remove the water. The land around the sanitorium was upraised well above the swamp so that construction continued as Forrester had invested too much money to stop construction. When Wilhelm B. Forrester Sanitorium first opened it's door, dozens of patients were brought to him and as word spread... there would be many more to follow.

Almost as if the need of others compelled her, Leona Forrester made a miraculous recovery and offered the type of compassion only she could provide as a former victim of the madness in this evil place herself. Unfortunately for many, Leona had recovered only because the madness which had possessed her restored her sanity even as it darkened her soul. She began to chronicle the stories of the victims brought to her so that she became a caretaker of sorts for secrets of Kravenwood believing that all the madness was based in a physical reality. Once she had gained the knowledge she desired from her patients, the tortures and suffering began. When paid to cure her patients, Lorena would literally break someone and rebuild their minds to overcome their fears and madness. At times, the dark forces within Kravenwood would lend themselves to Lorena so that the patients she treated returned home somehow different possessed of evil to exact their revenge. For those she wished to keep because they became her "pets", fate was much more cruel and for the abandoned it could even be merciless. It was said that no one died without Lorena's permission and those who did die became permanent residents doing as Lorena wished of them.

Construction on Wilhelm B. Forrester Sanitorium continued endlessly even as it was believed that most of the children within the sanitorium had been fathered by Wilhelm himself because Lorena refused to give him a child. Oddly enough, for all the children that might be found at the sanitorium, only those delivered to them in need of help survived past puberty as something became of the children at this time. Wilhelm was a man of fearsome countenance who beat anyone who did not do as he told them and yet, he would cease his brutality when Lorena made her presence felt. The pure hatred Wilhelm felt for his wife could not be overlooked anymore than the fact Lorena rarely spoke to anyone who was not a patient or a loved one of those undergoing treatment. Then one day, a worker arrived in town terrified and gravely wounded. The story he had to tell was one of extreme savagery as he had fallen asleep during the day working inside the sanitorium and the previous night had sought to find an exit in the darkness hoping none would learn he had slept the day away. Hearing voices and seeing light in a distant room, he had found his way to a room none of the workers had ever seen because they had built around it following Lorena's floor plans. Inside this room, he had seen Wilhelm Forrester chained and crying out desperately as before him lay three children lying on what appeared to be altars with two of the children butchered. As he watched on, the third child was then sacrificed by Lorena and as she did so, he watched as the childs spirit emerged and then flowed forth into it's fathers body. Then, another apparition emerged from the childs body seeming to be formed of blood which then entered unto Lorena merging with her as the blood became absorbed into her flesh. It was then that he had been spotted by one of the nurses who seemed to be part of this "cult" and gunshots rang out as he fled into the darkness seemingly led by a spirit to aid in his escape. When law enforcers arrived with the man the next day, he learned too late what wonders Lorena's charms might work as a few words were spoken and the police turned him over to her after a sound thrashing to prevent his escape.

What became of Wilhelm and Lorena Forrester isn't known beyond a reported date of their deaths with Wilhelm preceding his wife by almost ten years. But with Wilhelms death, workers at the sanitorium began reporting the sound of children and occasional sightings which people believed to be all the souls of the children Wilhelm had sired who had been released upon his death. The story about Lorena would be passed on as gossip as apparently she had been spikes driven into her body holding her aloft with chains as she ordered her servants to do and that they then cut her open after hours of torture she commanded of them. The reason, we are told, is that she was finally growing old without her husbands children to sustain her and wished to become one with the sanitorium. The sanitorium was then taken over by a sisterhood of nuns albeit no one knew of what denomination they were nor did they ask when they saw their inverted crucifixes and inappropriately revealing garb... they simply called them "sister" when they met them and treated them warmly fearing to do otherwise. In 1908, the white death came and many of it's victims were brought to the newly renamed White Wood Sanitorium. Almost as if the sisters running it knew what was coming, they began dressing in white gowns with crimson accents revealing what many saw as a macabre sense of humor. In 1927, the name was changed to Blackbriar Forrest Sanitorium reflecting the fact the the nearby town became known as Blackbriar and the land surrounding it known as Blackbriar Swamp while retaining part of it's founders name.

In 1958, the sanitorium was purchased by a man named Rupert Holmes who modernized it and restored the private quarters of Wilhelm and Lorena Forrester to the antebellum style mansion they had created with elaborate gardens. The swamp around the building likewise became transformed into streams following a grid pattern of his own design since not even he could drain the swamp which could only be tamed around the sanitorium itself. Taking the name Brother Blood, Holmes became leader of the Sisterhood of the White Death (as they had become known) as rumors of satanic rights and orgies christened by blood from those abandoned to the sanitorium. Such were not unknown and people largely ignored it until others disappeared who had not been abandoned but were still loved by their families. Vigilante justice would then be met out adding more souls to those already trapped within Blackbriar. Closed in 1982, Blackbriar Sanitorium would eventually be inherited by several living descendants of Wilhelm Blakely Forrester from the one child he had with his wife Lorena who had been abandoned to her sister when her mental illness became known. This child was carried away from Kravenwood which did not seem to desire holding the child as it often did many others who cannot escape this accursed land. As they arrived with their friends and loved ones to claim ownership, ancient evil awakened the spirits once more within Blackbriar and when it was done, only two survived to claim their inheritance whose souls were dark enough that they reopened Blackbriar Sanitorium as the new masters to an extremely dark legacy.

General Facts About Blackbriar Sanitorium

The idea behind Blackbriar Sanitorium is based on the premise that those who survive the horrors of Kravenwood who arrive here uninvited will often be driven insane should they survive. Most of these will be returned to Blackbriar and meet their fate within the sanitorium in an ironic twist of fate.

Blackbriar is meant to represent the horrors of early efforts to cure the mentally ill both in regards to religion and science which brought about what we today can only refer to as evil in regards to the victims treatment.

The addition of Brother Blood (Rupert Holmes) is that he modernizes Blackbriar so that the sanitorium is even more vile in it's nature adding elements of post World War II to the horror and the perversity of modern science as it seems thrown back to the dark ages.

Although the nearby town and swamp were once called Blackbriar, the residents now prefer the name Blackwater leaving the name Blackbriar to the sanitorium.

Lorena Forrester is still a commanding presence in the story as is her husband Wilhelm as both still exist within Blackbriar still as hateful towards one another and yet, bound to each other as for all their hate... they still love one another in ways unimagined by most. She is now a sadistic, tortured soul bound with chains and barbed wire. Wilhelm is an angry forceful spirit who can, nonetheless, show compassion to people vulnerable in a moment of fear so that they act more like children and through his power... that's what they become once more. If deserving, it seems Wilhelm can help some of these reborn children to escape knowing Kravenwood will only damn them to a different fate where at least they might live relatively normal lives.

Having reopened under Lenord and Leslie Forrester, Blackbriar came back alive with the twin siblings embracing it's darkness including the spirits within. New additions to the facilities and renovations have brought Blackbriar into the modern world but behind sealed doors and blocked passageways yet exists the older sanitorium.

Most of those brought to Blackbriar are undesirables from the outside world abandoned by it so they are quickly forgotten. In some cases, this can be a death sentence, but in others... the cause of vengeance is granted to them with the power to get even with those who hurt them. Such is Hells way that often to claim one soul, it empowers that soul to bring others down with it or in this case, possibly to damn the souls of those more deserving by bringing them to Blackbriar.

Brother Blood and the Sisterhood of the White Death survive within Blackbriar as well having grown in number because they joined with the other sisters who passed on before them. More wraith than spirit, they sometimes manifest to aid those helping in the front areas where new patients are acting more like succubi but not harming anyone that isn't marked by Kravenwood or Blackbriar as theirs for the taking.

13 Rooms
As you reach the top of the stairs you can see through a small window in the
top pane of the Door, The room beyond the grimy window is very
dark, mainly due to the poor state of the window.
You can just about make out some shapes in the
room… humanoid shapes!

1.The Reception room:
The cries of tormented souls and grinding metal
fill the musty air. Two rusty, iron bar doors on
the side walls separate this small chamber from
a pair of long, dark corridors where the cacophony
apparently originates. A rotting wooden
desk sits before a small, four-legged stool in
the center of the room. An open, leather-bound
book, a quill, and a vial of fountain ink rest
upon the desk. To the right of the front door
stands a tall storage locker. Two flickering
torches supplement the dim light from the corridors
beyond.
Seated behind the desk is a muscular, bald,
human male wearing a white tunic.

2.The Visiting room:
Tattered and stained cotton pads haphazardly
cover the walls and door of this small room.
The chamber’s meager furnishings consist of
two wooden chairs that face one another in the
center of the room. Iron shackles and leather
wrist restraints have been bolted onto the arms
and legs of the chair facing the door.

3.The East Corridor:
Large green patches of foul-smelling mildew
and stagnant puddles of water decorate the stone
walls and floor of this narrow corridor. Some
distance ahead, the corridor turns sharply to the
left. Plumes of oily smoke rise from a series of
ensconced torches, partially masking some of the
more unpleasant odors. Pained shrieks and
tortured cries emanate from a number of simple,
10-foot-square cells that line the south and east
sides of the corridor.
Separated from the corridor by iron bar
doors, each dank cell contains a stone slab that
apparently serves as a bed. A small trunk sits at
the foot of each slab, and a simple wooden privy
lurks in each corner. Emaciated arms stretch
between the bars of several of the doors, while
other patients stare catatonically at their bleak
surroundings.

4.The Infirmary:
The only light in this long room comes from
a pair of suspended bullseye lanterns, both
focused on the leftmost of three beds laying
flush against the far wall. A young woman is
strapped tightly to the bed by a series of leather
restraints, and she screams as blood pours from
a laceration on her forearm. An obese human
female dressed in a butcher’s apron stands over
the woman, holding a length of coarse black
thread attached to a fishing needle as she douses
her patient’s wound with a clear fluid.
A bronze coat rack converted into a portable
stand supports a tarnished metal tray above
the patient. The tray holds a variety of primitive
surgical instruments, as well as a half-empty
bottle of the clear fluid. In another corner of
the room sits a large steel cabinet. Dried blood
covers most of the floor, forming a sickening,
sandy paste.

5.The Display room:
This spacious room is a grisly sight, shocking you
at first and leaving you with a sense of dread about
what else may be in Forrester’ secret haven. The walls
of this long room have been coated in a black, shiny
substance and standing at regular intervals along
the black rubber floor are various examples of
expert taxidermy.
There are three human exhibits, that grotesquely staring at nothing,
along with a dozen or so large mammals. Each inhumanly
statue is lit up from its base, resulting in reflected
glares and terrifying shadows. Two shiny oak
doors are set in the South wall.

6.The Pickle room
Walking into this dimly lit room, you can’t help
but be disturbed by the throbbing sound of a
hidden generator. As your eyes adjust, you can
see the room is painted dark grey and has a black
rubber coating on the floor. Standing in the room
are display cases filled with a blue-green fluid;
there’s a shape in each case that you can’t quite
make out, but the little detail that you can see
disturbs you even more...

these are by boo
7. The Sheeting Room.
This always cold room is used for motivation. Once you are wrapped in sheets, bucket after bucket of ice cold water is thrown over your body until you are soaked to the skin with the bone chilling water. Next you are wrapped in a larger sheet. With each winding ice is placed between each layer. After several hours in "Cool Down Mode", you will be compliant to the wishes of the staff.

8. The ECT Room. AKA EGS Room.
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) room is a square room with granite walls and an abundence of equipment. When not in use it is dimly lit but the various tools of the trade can be seen. The long wide gurney is thinly padded with restraints for the head, both arms and both legs. Padded tongue depressors can be found on the stone shelf nearest the equipment. The side wall has hooks with ball gags and dildo gags hanging menacingly.
When in use the room becomes brighter then flickers as the buzzing can be heard outside the gray steel door.
