he character of John Kraven is shrouded in mystery which only a cursed soul like myself has any ability to know... and not even I dare to learn what the Master of the Manor does not want me to know. In a place such as this, the land holds many secrets and one of these secrets pushed upwards from the swamp heavy with children. She was not meant to live beyond her usefulness and when the moment came, she gave birth to the twins by pushing them out of her body to be claimed by the swamp. Years would pass as the she bitch's body decomposed on the land near where she had given birth. During a particularly dark and stormy night, the swamp would give up one of it's most unholy of hates. Several bolts of lightning had struck the waters where the she bitch had purged herself and as they boiled with rage, a boy child emerged from it's depths to embrace the rotting flesh of his mother. He would soon be followed by another, a twin sister who sat watching her brother until standing as if to signal to him that it was time to start their journey. Settled comfortably within the protection of the Bastide de Marie, the family of Leopold Charbonneau were uneasy as there were ill omens in the works and a sense of fear permeated everywhere within the house which had fallen into deathly silence. It was then that one of the women became drawn to look out into the night where flashes of lightning revealed a dark haired boy standing naked in the storm. Rushing to her calls, Leopold and others rushed to the doorway to seek out the child they had seen only to find him gone as if he had never been. For three days and three nights, the storm would continue unabated with the boy appearing each night until the fourth day when the rains finally ceased. Beginning a search in earnest, Leopold would find two pairs of footsteps revealing the presence of a second child hidden behind the first which they had not seen. Tracking the footsteps into the swamps, a week would pass before the Charbonneau family finally called off the search.
As day passed into night, the family was preparing themselves to retire when there came a knock to the door startling the family as who would visit at such a late hour. Opening the door, young Esmé would find the dark haired boy standing silently and unmoving until she called for her papa to address him. As he looked at the boy, the child slightly raised his head to lock eyes with Leopold and without saying a word, entered the Bastide de Marie followed by his sister both dressed in black as if they had garbed themselves with clothing buried with dead children. Although the children had not said a word, Leopold introduced them to his family as the young master Valère de
Kraven
and his twin sister was named
Valérie
. How he knew them by name was instantly confusing to the family even as Leopold himself wondered because he had heard the words as if spirits whispered in his ears telling him what he needed to know. This would not be the only mystery presented by the children as everyone went through the experience and came to accept them both as if they were their own flesh and blood. The most dutiful of Leopolds daughters, the second eldest Zofia, had become drawn to the boy as his personal guardian and provider until taking the enfant en bas âge Valère as her husband when he was at the tender age of nine. After the marriage, Valérie finally revealed her voice asserting her presence and revealing her intent to one day become Mistress of the Manor as was her right. Where others might resent or even challenge Valérie's claims, the family seemed to be somewhat under the spell of the all to often cold presence she presented. When Valérie came of age, Leopold became drawn to her unknowing of the corruption already possessing the hearts of his own children until it was too late. Lured beneath the foundations of his home into a chamber completely unknown to him, Leopold would find himself surrounded by robed figures even as Valérie lay before him upon what appeared to be a stone table. With his heart beating as if to burst and his mind consumed by lustful passions, Leopold would find himself embracing the young woman as if he were no longer in control of himself.
Staring darkly into Leopolds eyes, Valérie held him him like a black widow holding her mate within her bewitching gaze. Then, as if on cue, her brother emerged from darkness as one of the robed figures bowed before him presenting him with an ornate dagger. As Leopolds mind was suddenly brought back to a sense of reality from the first slash from the dagger and the searing pain which followed, the room seemed to change as around him now appeared the bodies of many he had once known. Each of their bodies lay ripped or torn and in various states of decay whose stench now filled his nostrils with the sweet smell of death. As he drew his last breaths, he would see the robed figures disrobe revealing the women of the family and as he finally slipped within the embrace of oblivion, he could hear them as their metal cups clicked against stone with each taking a cup of his lifesblood to drink into themselves. Pushing Leopolds body from her, Valérie would remove herself from the altar colored crimson with his blood and embraced her brother giving him a kiss before departing to follow her own path. Taking the name John Kraven to better fit in with the changing community around him as it was becoming increasingly Anglo and he could see where the country around him was moving. Because his parentage was unclear, it wasn't hard to convince authorities that he was the only son of Leopold Charbonneau especially with all the women of the family confirming his claims with Zofia speaking on his behalf. John Kraven had grown into a handsome man possessing enormous charisma with which to win over both men and women alike. He would also reveal that he actually could speak but barely above a whisper where getting close enough to speak into a persons ear seemed more a ruse because when he drew near, others always seemed to do as he would wish of them. Otherwise, the women who spoke for him would represent his desires on his behalf and there always seemed to be others who remained near as if a veiled threat to those who cared for them that they now belonged to him to do with as he willed.
John Kraven had become a fearsome man who ruled over his possessions with an iron fist and multiplied his holdings through shrewd investments. Any who crossed Kraven, or didn't do as they were told, would simply disappear while those who were among his most loyal and faithful supporters prospered. It was also rumored that Kravenwood Manor was a place of great evil where the dead screamed seeking their salvation when damnation held them firmly within it's tormented grasp. As for John Kraven himself, it became strongly rumored that he was in league with the devil and that he was not the son of Leopold Charbonneau, but the son of Satan himself making him the Anti Christ! By the time people might have acted, all the land of Kravenwood was now believed to be accursed. Stories of people and places, of creatures who should not be, were now becoming more widely known. As people sought escape, it was as if Kravenwood followed after to curse, condemn and destroy their lives if they did not return to the place they knew was their one true home. Those from the outside world who found themselves within Kravenwoods boundaries would find themselves subject to what many now considered to be the Darkest Place on Earth. When some among them finally found their courage and the means to act, they would burn Kravenwood Manor to the ground and while it was said that John Kraven had been slain, the truth was that none knew what had become of him. Instead, a mysterious dark haired boy arrived from the outside world claiming to be the son of John Kraven and he was attended by a veiled governess he called mother or mistress based on the moment. Unlike John Kraven, John jr employed a small army of henchmen and the family of Charbonneau again claimed him as the master of all the lands called Kravenwood. For most, it was clear that this was somehow John Kraven reborn or somehow diminished into the form of a child for survival. He would never be found without being in the presence of his governess. She was his protector and his voice but none were allowed to see her face... and any who tried would find themselves either lucky to be alive or wishing that they were as she was extremely powerful.
For almost a year, no one even knew where the child and his governess lived as they always eluded anyone pursuing them and seemed to disappear as soon as their pursuers looked away even for a moment. Then came an invitation to the Mayor of Charbonneau Township to meet with John Kraven and a a beautiful carriage arrived to pick him up driven by a gaunt figure he described as possessing the angriest eyes he had ever seen on a living man. As the Mayor arrived at his destination, it was as if he had traversed across miles of graveyards and ruined homes, symbols of death and decay none of which he had ever seen before. It was as if he were suddenly within another land and everywhere he could feel a presence as if he might be seeing death where all around him was only one immense, living... thing. Arriving at a large two story home, the Mayor could see what he perceived to be the figure of a man in an upstairs window and could only wonder at what fate awaited him. When he returned to Charbonneau Township, the Mayor would not speak of the things he had seen or heard as he would simply do what his hidden master told him. From his home, John Kraven had the ideal vantage point from which to know all the things happening in Kravenwood and all the various peoples who lived there. What people knew about him was what he wanted them to know about him as Kraven was never what he seemed to be. To some, he would continue the ruse of being a child attended by his governess. To others, he would appear as a dashing young man whose beauty caused women to immediately feel temptation and lust to be with him. But to the very few, he would reveal another form far more demonic as if he were some Norse god of the Inferno while possessing the grace of a Japanese lord and the bloodlust of an Aztec king. What most would come to fear was the belief that John Kraven could assume any form and be anywhere he desired, a trickster with an unknown agenda as if he were only the architect of something far greater yet to come. Whatever the reason for his existence, John Kraven would become master over all his dominion and it, in turn, would bear his name as the man and his dominion became one and the same... Kravenwood!
The Mistress of the Manor
Valérie de Kraven was born the twin sister of John Kraven and where he would prove a mystery, she would prove an even greater enigma as she seemed to be little more than a servant or possibly a lesser extension of whatever her brother was the greater whole. She would, however, prove an important
instrumentality
as she was taking control over the family while her brother was placing himself in position to create his own little piece of Hell on Earth. When speaking of herself, she would only say that she was the key to the kingdom which seemingly means she is the one who opens the doors to the power others claim for themselves. When Valérie lured Leopold Charbonneau to his death, it transferred ownership of everything he possessed to her brother and the supernatural powers he would then claim seemed to come from her opening the hidden doorways within the land itself. Her purpose served, Valérie would disappear into the mists and shadows of Kravenwood unlocking it's secrets and growing more powerful until the destruction of Kravenwood Manor. When she returned, she discovered her brothers remains within the ruins of the manor as he had been slain by a reincarnated Saint who used the salt of tears gathered from ten thousand angels (virgins) to bind him while another plunged a dagger of purest light into his heart. Causing what remained of him to burn into ash, the flames and ash were drawn into her along with the ruins of the manor before she again disappeared by sinking into the earth. When she returned, she was with a young boy and had assumed the guise of his governess. The boy was, of course, her brother as she had used her powers and body to restore him and it would take time for him to regain his full power. She would wear a veil to conceal her identity and the closest any came to seeing beneath the veil led to rumors of a skull, a serpents tongue and a hag even though her body said otherwise. Valérie was still quite beautiful even is there was often a sadistic smile on her face and a serpents tongue sometimes caressed her lips. With their return, Kravenwood Manor would also be recreated by the ancient powers within these dark lands and Valérie would become bound to it as the mysterious figure those unfortunate enough to find themselves within it's walls came to know as the Mistress of the Manor
