Julys Contest ~ Invasion of the Body Snatchers

Infiltration, a word often associated with spies and law enforcement to gain an advantage over an enemy. It can also be applied to parasites and other lifeforms that penetrate the bodies of other living beings to feed on them, control them or replace them altogether. It is the latter that this months contest focuses on as you are being challenged to put a scifi spin on the idea. There are countless examples of this concept in scifi with the movie Invasion of the Body Snatchers possibly being the best example. Alien spores rain down upon the Earth with humanity blissfully unaware what was really happening. But, as they slept, alien pods took form to duplicate and then replace us as the original turns to dust.

The concept comes in different forms such as in the tv series V where reptilian infiltrators come to our world disguised as humans to dwell among us. In the Terminator tv series and the movie Terminator Salvation, it is suggested that some of the skin used to create the Terminator infiltration units was harvested from living humans. In the movie Alien, we are first introduced to a creature that breeds within humans and takes a form that retains certain human characteristics vs forming within non-humans.

In John Carpenters movie They Live, special glasses are created that allows humans to see aliens who have infiltrated humanity using illusions. In another, Carpenter presents The Thing which is a remake of a classic horror movie where a Thing from outer space begins to take over peoples bodies, replicate them and then reveals itself in horrific ways. In the comics, you have Rom Spaceknight where creatures called Dire Wraiths use long barbed tongues to steal human DNA to replace them reducing their victims to husks.

You can use your own imagination but the concept of infiltration MUST BE ADHERED TO in a manner befitting science fiction. You can use your own imagination to accomplish this as the concept basically is extraterrestrials infiltrating our bodies to duplicate or to replicate and reproduce themselves. Maybe you want to use an existing theme but do it your own way such as basing your image on the movie Invasion of the Body Snatchers using watermelons instead of pods with watermelon vines coming out of their navels.

What about demons? Demons can be extraterrestrials as well because they aren't from this world. But, it must take a science fiction angle such as the movie Event Horizon, From Beyond, and other such science fiction movies based on Lovecraftian horror qualify. There are countless ideas based on the theme of aliens/robots taking over human bodies for different reasons and often enough, the human doesn't survive the experience.

Your art and your imagination are your own. Create your own story, illustrate your favorite book or a favorite movie... it's your choice. But make sure we can understand how this relates to the theme as the theme is infiltration and science fiction. Be innovative and do your best. Most of all, have fun and enjoy your work as we want this to be stress-free.

And if you've already been replaced by an alien pod... you're welcome to participate as well
 1) First and foremost, we want everyone to enter. If you do not wish for a prize but want to participate in the spirit of showcasing your talent, we will be creating a list of those members who will officially receive a DSA No Prize. We've had trouble in the past where members enter who actually do not want to win. These members don't want to take anything away from members who are participating to win prizes and we've had issues in the past where we tried to accommodate these members but not every judge understood or read comments by the artist not to choose their image. When the official contest topic is posted, we would like any member who only wants to participate in the spirit of competition to contact us and we will officially add them to the No Prize list.

 2) Your images must follow the theme to the best of your ability. But how you do this is up to your individual creativity and imagination. So ask if you have questions about the theme.

 3) There is a post limit of one image a day... no reworks as all images must be original for this contest. Try adding different races and different cultures... explore the variety that makes up who and what we are.

 4) Images cannot be posted anywhere else for five days and must include links to this contest or statements that it is for this contest.

 A) Images posted late will be excluded from judging

 5) Artistic nudity is allowed but our rules on child nudity apply. No child nudity is allowed. This is defined as genitals and nip's so cover them up or risk violating our rules. A good alternative would be anime. 

 6) The contest is open to any medium that you wish to use. You can enter with Computer generated images, photo manipulated, hand-drawn, painted, or any other type of medium you can think of. Make note of the prizes being offered as only rarely might they not be 3d oriented.

 7) We consider it trolling if criticism about content is made when images are within the rules.

 8. Unless otherwise specified, make sure to add an alternate prize selection should you want a bundle or partnered item. Some of our sponsors allow this, some do not and some may on certain items of which we have no way of knowing.

 9) Consider adding some written text to explain your illustrations to help others better understand your image and leave comments on the entries of fellow contestants to show your appreciation.

 10) Make sure to check and see if the prize you have won is a coupon or a gift certificate. If it clearly says it is a coupon, do not apply it as a gift certificate at the sponsors' site or vice versa.

 11) The theme should focus on your interpretation of alien lifeforms/robots infiltrating human bodies to replicate, control, or parasitically use them for their own purposes.

 13) Beginning June 1st, 2015; At the end of the month contests will be judged within 7 business days. Winners will be contacted but are also expected to check back in to avoid oversights barring unforeseen circumstances.

 14, Winners will provide a list including each sponsor in order that they would like to have the prizes. We will then choose what prizes you win on a first come, first serve basis. Our First Place winner will receive the first item on their list which will be removed from all other winners lists. Our Second Place winner will be given the first item remaining on their list and so forth. When each winner has been awarded a prize, we will begin again with the First Place winner until all prizes are awarded. 

 A) Our normal monthly contests will have 5 winners. Our larger contests will have up to 31 winners. We will alert members should this change at any time or if the sponsors have alerted us to award items to runners up.

 B. You may provide a list to us at any time during the month. Providing the list does not guarantee a prize. Items given to runners up, if any, will come from these lists or be donated by prize winners. 

 15) If you do not provide the items you would like where you have won a "choice" of items from the sponsor, on the list you provide to us, you will have 5 business days after notification to contact us. It is unfair that, in cases where a sponsor provides a prize to multiple winners, that winners who reply quickly must wait of winners who reply late.

 16) Remember, if you have any questions, please ask them in the contest topic so that staff or fellow members can explain and help you to understand rules or themes in our competition.

All are separate. This allows Renderosity to spread things out over multiple winners which is done by their request. You can only win the $100 gift certificate once ever six months but since it's not offered this month you can win multiple Rosity prizes over the six-month period as long as they aren't the $100 dollar gift certificate.

Renderosity normally sponsors us like this in July, October and sometimes in December so that your chances of getting Blacksmith is still there during those months if you don't win it this month but want it. Our October contest is always an homage to Halloween even if the there is a story to give you ideas and our December contest is likewise an homage but to Tim Burton and the concept of the Nightmare Before Christmas which means regular Christmas images count because the setting is still Christmas. So, you have a few months to get some art ready for those and can do your best in that time rather than waiting til October and December bearing in mind we sometimes start our Christmas contest in November so we can end it before Christmas... sometimes lol.

We try to get more participation for our contests that benefit members because more sponsors will join in both of big sponsorships and small as we sometimes get a new merchant sponsor or two if they see more participation and sometimes on merchant will authorize multiple items. We had Littlefox offer all her Plushies ay Christmas twice before as a single prize and she's put out new lines of Plushies since then but she has to see more participation in October before she does things like that. So, inviting more people over to participate actually benefits you as then we get more prizes to offer.

Prizes can sometimes be slow in regard to delivery because we rarely give the prizes ourselves and sponsors are like participants in that they have lives and things get in the way. Often we're late because participants get us their lists late so when they win we're waiting on their lists. When a sponsor hasn't delivered the prize, we need you to keep reminding us at least once a week so we can hopefully catch them but if you do this once a month or wait two months or so, it really does make it more difficult for us to catch them and get you your prize. I've had people fall behind a few months actually for that very reason and when the winner catches us at the right time we suddenly get them all their prizes within a few days just because we didn't know you hadn't received your prize as no one notifies us when they didn't receive a prize or that they delivered a prize with rare exception.
